OVA SPRING 2026 REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
Overview:
This program offers older students and alumni of Friend of the Woods an opportunity to step into purposeful leadership roles. Volunteers gain hands-on experience supporting teachers and younger members of our community, deepening their skills in stewardship, mentorship, and outdoor education. Through this experience, participants build self-confidence, a sense of purpose, and meaningful community connection.
After completing a set number of hours and competencies, mentors may advance to Guide status- a paid position within our nature school team.
Stage 1: Mentor (Volunteer/ Training Phase):
Purpose:
To learn the rhythms, responsibilities, and values of being a forest leader.
Requirements:
Minimum age: 12-13+ (or completed at least 2 full years of nature school)
Commitment: Occasional volunteering or up to 40 hours ( optional training for guide program)
Consistent attendance & positive participation
Become familiar with handbook & safety protocols
Volunteer Duties:
Assist guides and teachers with activity setup and cleanup
Model curiosity, kindness, awareness, and forest safety for younger students
Help younger children with gear, water bottles, and transitions
Join games, hikes, and lessons as an enthusiastic supportive presence
Participate in stewardship projects
Reflect weekly with guides & teachers
Serve as a role model for younger members of our community
Volunteer- to- Guide Checkpoints
Attend orientation & Review handbook
Demonstrate positive and enthusiastic community attitude and teamwork
Demonstrates knowledge and adherence to safety protocols (coyote call, boundaries, fire safety, etc.)
Takes initiative in small tasks (set–up, cleanup, helping peers, group engagement)
Completes 40-60 volunteer hours (essentially 1 season)
Reflective conversation with teachers about readiness
Stage 2: Guide (Paid Role)
Purpose: To lead alongside teachers and support mentors.
Requirements: Successful completion of Mentor stage, teacher recommendation, ongoing reliability, and enthusiasm for outdoor learning and connecting with nature and each other.
Guide Duties:
Co-lead small groups during hikes and activities
Model safety and respect for the land
Help plan and facilitate activities, crafts, games, story time, etc.
Serve as a role model for mentors & younger members of our community
Support stewardship projects and our mission
Compensation: Hourly rate or stipend per session, based on age & experience
Option to return as Senior Guide or Teacher Apprentice after continued participation
